Walnuts Reduce Breast Cancer Risk!

Eating walnuts, turns out to be a powerful defense against breast cancer. Researchers at the University of Virginia discovered lab animals eating a regular diet that included a modest amount of the nut had a significantly reduced breast cancer risk.

 

 

 

 

The effects of a standard diet as well as a diet containing walnuts throughout the lifespan of mice were compared. The quantity of walnuts used in the study was the equivalent of 2 ounces of walnuts per day for a human.

The mice who consumed the walnuts diet had much lower breast cancer rates, half in comparison to those in the standard diet group. In addition, the numbers and sizes of the tumors were substantially smaller.

The fact that the mice were genetically programmed to develop cancer at a high rate makes these reductions even more important. The reduce of the risk for cancer happened in the presence of a preexisting genetic mutation.

The walnut-containing diet changed the activity of multiple genes that are relevant to breast cancer in both mice and humans, which were proven using genetic analysis. Only having an increase in omega 3 fatty acids did not produce the anti-cancer effect. Tumor growth decreased when dietary vitamin E increased together with the omega 3.

It proves once again that diet plays a crucial role in health and the prevention of disease.
